All a Unit
Shadeless windows, darkened and translucent, linked together by a metal ladder resting sideways, neatly hung. They looked like an equation, symbolic and clean. The horizontal line framed a sweet union that underscored the windows, a couple of unadorned openings into darkness. But that’s not what first stopped me in my tracks the morning I wandered through a beach town along the Outer Banks. It was the repeated squares against the white-washed wall that initially caught my eye.
