Busy Bodies

To American eyes, the sight of phone calls made from a booth struck me like a flashback. In Istanbul the row of telephones provided a living graphic backdrop for the changing humans in need of a connection. After watching the action, the coming and going, callers appeared like musical notes, long whole notes and short staccato exchanges. A steady flow of people, some short timers - gone in under a minute, others who leaned in for maybe five minutes, a mere preamble it seemed, and then those who parked in place holding an expansive conversation the length of a television show.
