Clues to Another World 

Two middle school students decided to write about a museum portrait called Third World Blondes Have More Money by Daniela Rossell. The title alone is compelling, to say nothing of the cleavage, pink piglets and the Virgin Mother. The students writing about this piece were from Newcomers School in Greensboro, North Carolina. It’s a school composed solely of newly arrived immigrants, most of them political refugees, most of them from places considered “third world.” At the time of my year-long art residency, 38 languages were spoken at the school.
