Mama’s Lips
In the middle of photographing the sisters Q, they began imitating their mama, whose name was Paula and was a very southern Southern girl. A native of eastern North Carolina, she spoke with an accent so thick and slow that just saying her first name, Paula, took the time of a small wave to crash over the letter L, to say nothing of her endless last name, Qualliotine. The sisters made up a hilarious Paula conversation, both pretending to be their theatrical ma, with her lips pressed together and pouty, moving in an awkward way that set in after receiving countless collagen injections. With Paula it was often tragicomedy, steep lows and many illegal highs, and still the daughters were loving and strong, and, yes, at times, satirical and keen mimics.
