They’re Us

A photo of two cars side by side could also be a portrait of me and my husband, Mark. His car with a license plate and a proper green garage, clearly defined lines, a sense of order, mine with a slighter frame, a tad more rust, no tags, no sheltering garage. Both are chums, content with such similar aesthetic choices and minor differences. He’s always been more socially established, more credentialed and better known, and therein lies the key difference in our style and standing as we live our tandem life. Mark doesn’t see these differences. Then again, he can’t fathom how two old cars look like us in the first place. So, there’s that distinction, too.
