Two Peas in a Pod

For a half mile Julia and Kadush walked and talked, tugged, teased, and laughed, animated and free, as they ambled down one of the wide boulevards running through central Melbourne. We were on the same route. After a few blocks, delighted by their energy, we ended up stopped at a red light, waiting at an intersection. I asked if I could photograph them for my project. Sure, of course, yes, they said and then immediately he hopped around her, hugged her, she smiled and their collective beam again ignited.

“How long have you been dating?” I asked. They froze for a second, craning to stare at each other, but before I could mutter, uh-oh, they’d erupted with laughter. Dating was, it seemed, absurd. Preposterous. Funny. Out of the question.
